Named after the Amharic word for ‘forty springs,’ Arba Minch is an area of many tiny springs that bubble up from the ridge below them. It’s a lovely 3k walk through Nechisar National Park to reach the springs. If you use this area as a stop on the southern Ethiopian circuit, you won’t be disappointed.

Description

OVERVIEW

Founded in 1886 by Emperor Menilik II en route to conquering the remains of kingdoms, eventually establishing the modern border of Ethiopia. Addis Ababa lies a few kilometers west of the East African Rift which splits Ethiopia into two, between the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate.

ADDIS ABABA

Walking along the street starting from Meskel q, to Sidest Kilo is very safe and entertaining. It will give you the chance to see the Africa Hall, the Palace, the Parliament building, and so much more. At the foot of Entoto Mountain, at an altitude of 3,300 meters above sea level, there is a traditional marketplace where you can souvenir friends and families.

Entoto Park will give you the chance to see rural life, the city itself, first and unbelievably beautiful landscape intersected by farmlands and trails of farmers. It is from here that Menelik II and Queen Taitu conceived the establishment of Addis Ababa. You can get a sense of the city plan yourself by looking from here at the current city.

When to Go

Travelling in the South is possible at any time of year, but each season will bring with it a different experience. Many tourists choose to go between September and November when the landscape is alive with green after the rainy season. December through April is also fine hiking weather, as the sun is often out and temperatures are higher, but views tend to be a little hazy, and the landscape turns from vivid green to yellow and dry. The least popular hiking months are June, July, and August when rain falls daily. Temperatures during the day tend to be comfortably warm in all seasons but can fall below zero at night, so pack warm clothes and a good sleeping bag.

Keep In Mind

To make sure that your environmental impact is minimal, whenever you travel, don’t forget to take the following steps:
  • Always carry ID or relevant document at your side;
  • Try to avoid expensive jewelry or unnecessary equipment, if not carry them with you at all costs;
  • Do not collect or damage any vegetation and do not disturb or feed wild animals;
  • Remember to take all of your litter with you;
  • Camp only in designated areas;
  • Always use latrines where provided, or bury waste at least 100 meters away from water;
  • Do not use soaps in natural waterways.
