The Great Rift Valley lies between the Ethiopian Plateau to the north and the Somalia Plateau to the south. It is about 80 km wide and bordered on both sides by large, discontinuous normal spots that give rise to major tectonic cliffs separating the rift floor from the surrounding plateau. Most lakes do not have an outlet and are alkaline.

Awash National Park

This national park covers 756 square kilometers of arid and semi-arid woodland alongside the Awash River. Wildlife in the park includes dik-dik, kudu, warthog, East African oryx, Soemmerring’s gazelle, and baboon. The bird life is prolific especially along the river and in nearby Lake Basaka, making it a birder’s paradise. There are many endemic birds and in total, 392 species have been recorded here.

Abijatta-Shalla National Park

Abijatta-Shalla National Park is one of the national parks in Ethiopia. It is located 200 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, and east of the Ziway-Shashamane highway. With an area of 887 square kilometers, it contains the Rift Valley lakes of Abijatta and Shalla. The two lakes are separated by three kilometers of hilly land. The altitude of the park ranges from 1540 to 2075 meters. The highest peak of Mount Fike is situated between the two lakes. Besides the two lakes, the primary attractions of this national park are a number of hot springs on the northeast corner of Lake Abijatta and large numbers of flamingos on the lake.

Langano

Lake Langano is 18 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide, with a surface area of 230 square kilometers. As its free of Bilharzia (schistosomiasis), unlike all other freshwater lakes in Ethiopia, this lake is popular with tourists and city-dwellers. It is brown colored and at first sight one may think that the lake is not clean.

When to Go

Traveling in the South is possible at any time of year, but each season will bring with it a different experience. Many tourists choose to go between September and November when the landscape is alive with green after the rainy season. December through April is also fine hiking weather, as the sun is often out and temperatures are higher, but views tend to be a little hazy, and the landscape turns from vivid green to yellow and dry. The least popular hiking months are June, July and August when rain falls daily. Temperatures during the day tend to be comfortably warm in all seasons but can fall below zero at night, so pack warms clothes and a good sleeping bag.

Keep In Mind

To make sure that your environmental impact is minimal, whenever you travel, don’t forget to take the following steps:
  • Always carry ID or relevant document at your side,
  • Try to avoid expensive jewelry or unnecessary equipment, if not carry them with you at all costs,
  • Do not collect or damage any vegetation and do not disturb or feed wild animals,
  • Remember to take all your litter with you,
  • Camp only in designated areas,
  • Always use latrines where provided, or bury waste at least 100 meters away from water,
  • Do not use soaps in natural waterways.
