It is about 80 km wide and bordered on both sides by large, discontinuous normal spots that give rise to major tectonic cliffs separating the rift floor from the surrounding plateau. Most lakes do not have an outlet and are alkaline.

ZiWAY

Ziway is a town on the shore of Lake Ziway. Lake Ziway is the closest major Rift Valley lake to Addis Ababa, 162 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. The main sight in Ziway is the large lake. Many waterfall can be found, as well as boats to the islands scattered about the lake and to hippo spots.

Itinerary

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Zeway

Drive from Addis Ababa to Ziway and put your luggage at your Hotel at Haile Resort and the afternoon depart with a boat on a freshwater Lake Ziway. This lake is known for its population of birds and hippopotamuses. The shores and islands of Lake Ziway are the home of the Zay people.

Day 2: Zeway – Abijata Shala National Park – Awassa

In the morning, you will drive to the Abijatta-Shalla National Park which mostly has abundant birds and ostriches. Then, you will drive to the beautiful rift valley town of Awasa and check-in at Haile Resort.

Day 3: Awassa – Tiya – Addis Ababa

Drive to Addis Ababa via Buta Jira just to visit the standing stone of Tiya stela and Adadi Mariam church which is believed built by King Lalibela.  And drive back to Addis Ababa.

When to Go

Travelling in the South is possible at any time of year, but each season will bring with it a different experience. Many tourists choose to go between September and November when the landscape is alive with green after the rainy season. December through April is also fine hiking weather, as the sun is often out and temperatures are higher, but views tend to be a little hazy, and the landscape turns from vivid green to yellow and dry. The least popular hiking months are June, July and August when rain falls daily. Temperatures during the day tend to be comfortably warm in all seasons but can fall below zero at night, so pack warms clothes and a good sleeping bag.
