Description
Overview
Wenchi crater lake, incorrectly spelled as Wanchi or Wonchi, is a volcano located 98km west of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Located between Ambo and Woliso town, it is situated at an altitude of 3,450 masl and 13.5km from Mount Denbi.
Wenchi Lake
This highest volcano has a 4 x 4 km wide caldera and a single crater lake, Wenchi lake, about 450 m below the rim. Though the study of the caldera is incomplete, it contains hot springs, waterfalls, valleys, and beautiful scenery. In addition, there are two islands accessible by ferry, one of which hosts an ancient monastery, Cherkos Monastery.
Its unique landscape and various animals and plant species became a popular tourist destination. Moreover, tourism has appeared as one of the rapidly growing economic sectors in this district. The main factors to recently nominate Wenchi as one of the best tourist sites in the world include; road construction from Ambo-Woliso town and the “Gebeta Lehager" projects initiative, launched by the Prime Minister in August 2020.
