Lalibela is one of Ethiopia’s most important historical and religious cities, famous for its extraordinary rock-hewn churches carved directly into volcanic rock. Located in the northern Ethiopian highlands, Lalibela has been a major center of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity for centuries.
Origins and the Zagwe Dynasty
Lalibela’s history is closely connected with the Zagwe Dynasty, which ruled much of Ethiopia approximately from the 12th to the 13th century. The city was originally known as Roha and became an important political and religious center during this period.
The city is traditionally associated with King Lalibela, who ruled in the late 12th and early 13th century. According to Ethiopian tradition, Lalibela wanted to create a holy city that would serve as a symbolic New Jerusalem, allowing Ethiopian Christians to make a pilgrimage without traveling to Jerusalem.
The Rock-Hewn Churches
King Lalibela is traditionally credited with commissioning the construction of 11 remarkable churches, which were carved downward into massive blocks of volcanic rock.
Rather than constructing the churches by placing stones on top of one another, craftsmen excavated the surrounding rock to reveal complete buildings. Some churches are connected by underground tunnels, trenches, courtyards, and passageways.
Among the most famous is Bete Giyorgis (Church of Saint George), a cross-shaped church carved approximately 15 meters into the rock. It is one of Ethiopia’s most recognizable historical monuments.
Other important churches include:
- Bete Medhane Alem – one of the largest rock-hewn churches in Lalibela.
- Bete Maryam – traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary.
- Bete Meskel – known for its distinctive architectural features.
- Bete Golgotha – associated with religious traditions concerning the Passion of Christ.
- Bete Gabriel-Rafael – located within a complex of churches and passageways.
- Bete Amanuel – noted for its finely carved architectural details.
- Bete Abba Libanos – traditionally associated with King Lalibela’s wife.
