Overview

For most visitors to Ethiopia, it is about the northern Ethiopia or the Historic Route, which covers all the major historical sites. Unlike anywhere else on Earth, northern Ethiopia has the ability to wow you day after day after day. The historic route packed full of astounding and ancient history as well as some of the best scenery in Africa. There are over two millennia worth of ancient treasures scattered about, from the magnificent Blue Nile Falls, take a boat trip on the vast Lake Tana and explore isolated island monasteries, walk in some of the most dramatic mountains you’re ever likely to see; in Lalibela a mysterious ancient rock-hewn churches lies frozen in stone.

Lalibela

Highland Adventure through the Holy lands Combining a visit to the historic Lalibela rock-hewn churches with trekking in the highlands is the perfect way to experience Ethiopia's rich history as well as its natural beauty. Lalibela is usually billed as Ethiopia's number one tourist attraction not to mention holy shrine to which thousands of Orthodox pilgrims flock every year on January 7th. We believe the contrast of visiting the churches that attract people from all around the world with visiting a mountain that very few people visit gives the adventurer the best of both worlds.

When to Go

Travelling in the North is possible at any time of year, but each season will bring with it a different experience. Many tourists choose to go between September and November when the landscape is alive with green after the rainy season. December through April is also fine hiking weather, as the sun is often out and temperatures are higher, but views tend to be a little hazy, and the landscape turns from vivid green to yellow and dry. The least popular hiking months are June, July and August when rain falls daily. Temperatures during the day tend to be comfortably warm in all seasons but can fall below zero at night, so pack warms clothes and a good sleeping bag.
